The emerging Tirana

Accommodation in hotels, guesthouses and tents

This challenging tour is suitable for all lovers of nature and adventure. We have carefully planned all its stages, so that you have the opportunity to discover something new every day, to be active and in touch with nature. Diverse landscapes of high spectacular mountains, remote valleys, deep gorges, glaciers, cliffs, rivers, caves and lakes combined with abundant flora and wildlife will accompany you during the entire journey.

Day 1: The wild-romantic Valbona Valley (500-1100m)

After arrival at noon, transfer from “Mother Teresa” airport to Valbona. The road goes through the city of Gjakova in Kosovo, and re-enters Albania near Bajram Curri.

Afterwards it runs through the valley, along the Valbona River, surrounded by wild and beautiful natural panorama and the rugged mountain peaks of the Albanian Alps, up to the village of Valbona. In the afternoon we’ll discuss the program for the next days. The accommodation is provided in a guest house in Valbona. (-/-/D)

Day 2: Local life in the surroundings of Valbona. (1650 m): T2, WT 4h, Am↑750m, Dm↓750m

Just after breakfast we will start hiking towards the hanging glacial valley of Kukaj. The trail runs through boulders and meadows, entering the beech forest. Passing by the houses of Kukaj, the path follows the right side of the valley until a small grassy plateau with a mountain hut, where we will be offered a coffee from the local shepherds.

After a short photo break, hike down to the guest house in the valley. (B/L/D)

Day 3: Over the Valbona Pass to Theth: T2, WT 7h, Am↑900m, Dm↓1070m

Today we will walk along the Valbona valley up to Rragam located at 1130m altitude. The trail leads gently uphill through open forest to a glade with rocks and then follows a rough upward slope. On the "Qafa e Valbonës" in the altitude of 1812m, the view of both valleys is unique. The descent towards Thethi begins very steep on a gravel path and follows through the forest. During this trip we will be accompanied by horses that carry our luggage. The overnight stay is planned in a guest house with shared rooms in Theth. (B/L/D)

Day 4: Theth and surroundings: T1+, WT 6h, Am↑450m, Dm↓450m

For today is planned a less demanding hike through the forest. The walk begins in the village with a visit of the "Isolation Tower". Then we will hike to the Waterfall of Grunas and to the Grunas Canyon that is 30 meters in height and one meter in width. After a short break, the hike continues up to Ndërlysa. On the way, is planed the visit of the mill of Kolaj, a small structure which is put to work by a stream of water diverted from the river.

The glacier mills of Ndërlysë offer a unique nature spectacle. The water squeezes itself through a narrow approach that has arisen over the millennia. Rounded and sharp rocks, half dipped into the shimmering colours of water and all around green vegetation will surround our path. We will continue our hike up to the "Blue Eye of Kaprre" (Syri i kaltër i Kaprresë), a spellbinding natural pool with amazingly blue water in a jungle-like environment. After a short break, follows the hike back to Ndërlysa, from where we will be transferred to our guesthouse. (B/L/D)

Day 5: Ascent of the Arapi Summit (2217m): T4, WT 8h, Am↑1467m, Dm↓500m

Arapi mountain is 2217 meters high, but with its 800-meter high south wall, the highest in the Balkans, it dominates the National Park of Theth as a prominent rock formation.

Beginning from Thethi we will take the trail that goes besides the river. Approaching Peja Pass (Qafa e Pejës) the trail becomes steeper, running through the rocky blocks. The hike continues westward, winding through steep meadows and big blocks of limestone cliffs. Arapi Peak is located on top of a series of diagonal karst plates that are quite impressive. Once over these, we will turn in the direction of the summit reaching it after hiking on the ridgeline.

We will follow the same trail back to the Pass of Pejë, from where the trail ascends gently eastward to the " Gropat e Bukura ", where overnight is planned in tents. (B/L/D).

Day 6: Jezerca (2964m), the highest mountain of the Dinaric Alps and Valbonë: T5, WT 9h, Am↑1070m, Dm↓1600m

From the "Gropat e Bukura", the trail runs eastwards towards Jezerca. The ascent to the northern ridge of Jezerca gets difficult; the terrain becomes more rugged and exposed. With a height of 2694 meters, Jezerca dominates the Albanian Alps and the view from the top is amazing. The steep descent towards southeast is relatively risky and exposed. The trail leads towards Papluka Summit and then left to the Trough of Vali (Lugu i Valit). At the foot of the Pass of Valbona (Qafa e Valbonës), the trail becomes smoother and goes through the woods up to Rragam. Overnight is planned in a guest house in shared rooms. (B/L/D).

Day 7: The Komani lake and Tirana (110m)

The day starts with the transfer to Fierza, where our ferry ride begins (important to note that the ferry trip depends on the water level of the lake). The ferry ride across Lake Koman allows you to see some spectacular scenery, not unlike a Norwegian fjord winding its way between high cliffs and towering peaks. We will leave the ferry in Koman, from where the trip will continue by car to Tirana.

Founded in 1614, Tirana became the capital of Albania in 1920 and is the main cultural and industrial centre of Albania. The city boulevards are marked with fascinating relics of the Ottoman, Italian and communist past.

Tirana has changed incredibly in the last twenty years, from the dull, grey city it once was. Tirana is a city where fun is guaranteed: lively, loud, crazy, colourful, simply fascinating.

In the afternoon, a tour of the city is planned along with a visit to the National Historical Museum, Et’hem Bey Mosque and the Skanderbeg monument. After the visit, we will walk to the restaurant for the “A la carte” dinner. Accompaniment back to the hotel. (B/L/D)

Day 8: Transfer to the airport

After breakfast, the transfer to the airport will be according to your scheduled flight. (B/-/-)
