Walk in Theth und surroundings

We chose the mountains and the most beautiful places of the Albanian Alps while organizing this journey for you. The National Parks of Valbonė and Theth are intact natural areas. Majestic scenery, spectacular mountains, remote valleys, deep gorges, glaciers, cliffs, rivers, caves and lakes will accompany you throughout the journey.

Day 1: Tirana, the vibrant capital (110m) and Pėllumbas Cave (479m): T2, WT 3h, Am↑300m, Dm↓300m

After arrival at noon, transfer from “Mother Teresa” airport to the hotel in downtown Tirana. Founded in 1614, Tirana became the capital of Albania in 1920 and is the main cultural and industrial centre of Albania. The city boulevards are marked with fascinating relics of the Ottoman, Italian and communist past.

Tirana has changed incredibly in the last twenty years, from the dull, grey city it once was. Tirana is a city where fun is guaranteed: lively, loud, crazy, colourful, simply fascinating.

Our activities begin on arrival day. After a short break we will pick you up at the hotel and proceed to the Pėllumbas cave. The well-marked path runs along some steep cliffs with stunning views over the gorge of the river Erzen. The cave is 380 meters long, 10-15m wide and 15-45m high. The path to the cave is very pleasant and secure. There are rest areas with benches and several lookout points along the way. After the first 40 meters, the cave is completely dark. The ground can be muddy and slippery. After visiting the cave, we return back to the city and walk to the restaurant for the dinner. Accompaniment back to the hotel. (-/-/D)

Day 2: The Koman Lake and the wild-romantic Valbona Valley (500-1100m)

The day starts with the transfer to Koman, where our ferry ride begins (important to note that the ferry trip depends on the water level of the lake). The ferry ride across Lake Koman allows you to see some spectacular scenery, not unlike a Norwegian fjord winding its way between high cliffs and towering peaks. We will leave the ferry in Fierza, from where the trip will continue by car to Bajram Curri. Afterwards the road runs through the valley, along the Valbona River, surrounded by wild and beautiful natural panorama and the rugged mountain peaks of the Albanian Alps, up to the village of Valbona. In the afternoon we’ll discuss the program for the next days. The accommodation is provided in a guest house in Valbona. (B/L/D)

Day 3: The outstanding Kollata (2555m): T4, WT 7.5h, Am↑1625, Dm↓1625m

Right after breakfast starts today's hiking. We will depart from the village of Valbonė and follow the steep trail along the trough of Prosllopi (Lugu i Prosllopit) up to the vicinity of the Montenegrin border. At first, the trail goes through the forest, but when we reach the altitude of 1700m, there is no longer any vegetation. The Majestic view from the beginning to the end of Valbona Valley isn't possible from any other summit. After a short break, starts the descent back to guest house. (B/L/D)

Day 4: Rosi summit (2522m): T4, WT 8.5h, Am↑1593m, Dm↓1593m

The day starts with the hike towards the hanging glacial valley of Kukaj. The trail runs through boulders and meadows, entering the beech forest. Passing by the houses of Kukaj, the path follows the right side of the valley until a small grassy plateau with a mountain hut, where we will be offered a coffee from the local shepherds. From here the hike becomes steeper and the ascent to the northwest leads to the pass at 2150m altitude.

We will follow the trail that runs parallel to the Montenegrin border towards Rosi summit. From the summit the view is breath-taking and extends up to Jezerca, Vuthaj and Guci in Montenegro. After a short photo break, hike down to the guest house in the valley. (B/L/D)

Day 5: Over the Valbona Pass (1812m) to Theth: T2, WT 7h, Am↑900m, Dm↓1070m

Today we will start walking along the Valbona valley up to Rragam located at 1130m altitude. From there the trail leads gently uphill through open forest to a glade with rocks and then follows a rough upward slope. On the "Qafa e Valbonės" in the altitude of 1812m, the view of both valleys is unique. The descent towards Thethi begins very steep on a gravel path and follows through the forest. During this trip we will be accompanied by horses that carry our luggage. The overnight stay is planned in a guest house with shared rooms in Theth. (B/L/D)

Day 6: Theth and surroundings: T1+, WT 6h, Am↑450m, Dm↓450m

For today is planned a less demanding hike through the forest. The walk begins in the village with a visit of the "Isolation Tower". Then we will hike to the Waterfall of Grunas and to the Grunas Canyon that is 30 meters in height and one meter in width. After a short break, the hike continues up to Ndėrlysa. On the way, is planed the visit of the mill of Kolaj, a small structure which is put to work by a stream of water diverted from the river.

The glacier mills of Ndėrlysė offer a unique nature spectacle. The water squeezes itself through a narrow approach that has arisen over the millennia. Rounded and sharp rocks, half dipped into the shimmering colours of water and all around green vegetation will surround our path. We will continue our hike up to the "Blue Eye of Kaprre" (Syri i kaltėr i Kaprresė), a spellbinding natural pool with amazingly blue water in a jungle-like environment. After a short break, follows the hike back to Ndėrlysa, from where we will be transferred to our guesthouse. (B/L/D)

Day 7: Ascent of the Arapi Summit (2217m): T4, WT 8h, Am↑1467m, Dm↓1467m

Arapi mountain is 2217 meters high, but with its 800-meter high south wall, the highest in the Balkans, it dominates the National Park of Theth as a prominent rock formation.

Beginning from Thethi we will take the trail that goes besides the river. Approaching Peja Pass (Qafa e Pejės) the trail becomes steeper, running through the rocky blocks. The hike follows the path which winds westward, through steep meadows and big blocks of limestone cliffs. Arapi Peak is located on top of a series of diagonal karst plates that are quite impressive. Once over these, we will turn in the direction of the summit reaching it after hiking on the ridgeline. We will follow the same trail back to the guest house. (B/L/D).

Day 8: Return trip to Tirana through Shkodėr

In Shkodra, we have planned a tour of the city and lunch at a traditional restaurant where you can choose between various dishes on the menu. Arrival to Tirana will be around 06:00 pm and, after a short break, dinner will be served at a restaurant "A la carte". (B/L/D)

Day 9: Transfer to the airport

After breakfast, the transfer to the airport will be according to your scheduled flight. (B/-/-)
