  • This is a self-guided mountain bike tour. We will provide you with all the necessary information to safely perform it.
  • Mountain biking is a potentially hazardous activity carrying a significant risk. It should only be undertaken with a full understanding of all inherent risks.
  • This tour requires good off-road skills and techniques to cope with technical terrain features, as well as a high level of fitness.
  • Accommodation in the shepherds’ hut is an exciting and authentic experience without the usual indoor plumbing.
  • This tour starts and ends in Tirana, We will take care of your transfers from Tirana to the starting point of the cycling tour on day 1, and from the ending point of the tour back to Tirana, on day 4.
Day 1: Scenic Roads and Alpine Serenity in Valbona

Cycling: 2h, 9km, ↑400m, ↓400m

This tour starts with a transfer to Valbona, traveling through Kosovo’s Gjakova and crossing back into Albania near Bajram Curri. The road winds through the Valbona River Valley, where the rugged peaks of the Albanian Alps frame an unforgettable natural panorama. We will drop you off in Valbona, where you can take a leisurely ride to explore the valley’s stunning landscapes. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be provided in Valbona.

Day 2: Exploring the Remote Beauty of the Albanian Alps

Cycling: 7h, 40km, ↑1900m, ↓1150m

Begin your day with an exhilarating bike ride, starting on smooth tarmac towards the charming village of Dragobia. From there, the adventure intensifies as you transition onto gravel roads leading to the remote village of Çerem. The journey continues on a winding dirt road, where forests give way to high alpine meadows. In autumn, the hillsides are painted in hues of deep red from blueberry bushes, creating an unforgettable mosaic of colour. Your destination is Dobërdol, a serene alpine plateau above the tree line, where you’ll spend the night in a cozy shepherd’s hut.

Day 3: A Journey from Sylbicë to Bajram Curri

Cycling: 6h, 41km, ↑650m, ↓2000m

Today’s adventure begins with a challenging 450-meter ascent, climbing steeply to a scenic mountain pass. From there, the route takes you toward the remote village of Sylbicë, a tiny settlement that feels like stepping back in time. As you pass through, the road shifts to gravel and dirt, descending gradually to the village of Tropojë. The final stretch of the day is a smooth ride on tarmac, leading to Bajram Curri, where accommodation is arranged for a comfortable evening.

Day 4: Riding along the Drin River

Cycling: 8h, 59km, ↑1000m, ↓1400m

After breakfast, starts the ride from Bajram Curri to the ferry terminal in Fierzë, where your adventure transitions to the water. Board the ferry for a breathtaking journey across Koman Lake, a reservoir along the Drin River known for its striking resemblance to Norwegian fjords. Towering cliffs and dramatic peaks surround you, creating an unforgettable experience. Once ashore in Koman, the ride continues along a rugged asphalt road by the Vau i Dejës lake, leading to the village of the same name. From there, a vehicle transfer takes you to Tirana, marking the conclusion of your adventure.

Riding time:
Estimated riding times are given for each day. These times do vary, however, according to the day’s weather conditions, and the fitness levels of the tour participants. These times do not include times taken for meals and breaks.

 

Equipment:

Rental of mountain bikes is not possible for self-guided tours. You will have to bring your own mountain bike and necessary spare parts and will be responsible for its maintenance.

 

Technical Difficulty:

This trip has been rated as Moderate
This trip is designed for mountain bikers of average fitness able to cover a maximum of 60km per day on back-to-back days. There is a mixture of dual track trails, badly asphalted roads, and short sections of smooth tarmac near inhabited areas.
You will be riding on public and/or gravel roads, that are shared with other road users. Please be careful and courteous towards them. All relevant traffic laws need to be followed at all time.

 

Orientation:

Most of the trails are signed, but not always visible. Some of the trails might not be well marked and eventual bad weather can make navigation difficult. We will provide you with a detailed information package to help your navigation. Good navigation skills are necessary.

 

Luggage transportation:

During this tour you will have to carry your own luggage. Please pack carefully and lightly.
We will take care for the transportation of your luggage only during the transfers on days 1 and day 4.
